Psalm 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
I shared in a recent post about a beautiful print my sister Kimmy made for me of a quote that encourages me. Also hanging in my home is a painting of Psalm 91 that a friend gave to me when I was first diagnosed with cancer. If you have not committed the entire Psalm to memory, I recommend that you do so. It is a powerful way to combat the lies of the devil, bring peace and comfort to you in any situation, and give glory to Almighty God! The trifecta of power that saves!
When I was given a scary diagnosis, fear accompanied that diagnosis like a terrifying blanket that wrapped itself around me and sucked every bit of peace, safety, and comfort from me. Night and day the fear plagued me and tried to rob me of the abundant life that Jesus had given me.
My sister, Bethany, who is a beautiful dancer and choreographer, took me to her kitchen one day and began to play a worship song called Healer as she danced over me. One of the lines in the song is, “I trust in You! I trust in You! I believe that You’re my healer.” At that point in the music she instructed me to lift my hands in the air as if I were grabbing onto the hand of the Lord. It was a physical representation of what was happening in the spiritual realm. I was holding onto the Lord and trusting Him to hold onto me.
From that very powerful moment on, any time that fear seeped its way back into my spirit and soul, I would physically reach my hand in the air and grasp my Lord’s hand. I would imagine myself sitting in His lap in His secret place, in His fortress, and I would find rest in His shadow. And I would say aloud, “Lord, I trust you. I trust that you are my refuge and that you love me. I claim your promise of long life because I am calling upon you, in the name of Jesus!”
I dwell in your secret place. I rest under your shadow. I know that you are my refuge and my fortress. I trust you. And therefore I claim Your promise that You will give me long life and show me Your salvation!
